Best Rollator Walkers Product Buying Guide

Rollator walker buying guide

Looking to purchase a new rollator or upgrade an existing one?  If so, there are some things you should keep in mind while searching.  We outlined the most important things to keep an eye on when looking for the a rollator walkers.

2-Wheel, 3-wheel, or 4wheels. What is the main difference?

2-wheel walkers typically have two wheels on the front legs and rubber pegs on the back. These types of walkers are lightweight, easy-to-fold, and can be taken anywhere. Those that may not have a lot of strength to lift a walker like a standard walker can benefit from a two-wheel walker model.

3-wheel rollators can make tighter turns
If you are using your rollator indoors in smaller conditions and hallways a 3 wheel rollator can make tighter turns.

Unlike traditional walkers, rolling walkers or rollators allow for great stability but still allow you to move quicker than the traditional walker.   But that is not the only difference.  Let’s take a look at some other things that separate these two from each other.

3 wheel rollators:

Strength: The 3 wheel rollators typically are more narrow and have a higher turning radius than a 4-wheel rollator.  Because of these they may be better suited for smaller hallways and areas indoors.  They are also typically lighter making their travel a little easier.  But with every strength, there are also some weaknesses compared to the 4-wheeled model.

Weakness:  Because they have 3 wheels they are not as stable as their 4 wheel cousins. They also may not provide a seat like the 4-wheel models.

4 wheel rollators:

The strength of a 4 wheel rollator is they provide better stability and support than a 3 wheel rollator simply because of the design and 4th wheel.    They also have built-in seats and some have backrests that make resting really easy.    You can even use seat cushions for extra cushions to make sitting more comfortable.

Weakness:  Not as nimble as the 3 wheel models for tight doorways and hallways.  They can also tend to be a little heavier because of the extra wheel.

Weight capacity of the rollator

The weight capacity of a rollator is important.  Especially for 4 wheel devices that can be sat on when resting needs to take place.  A lot of these rollators will have weight capacities from 250 pounds up to 300 pounds plus.

Try and not to push the limits of the capacity purely out of safety reasons.  if you are at the top end of a product weight limit always opt to find a mobility device that offers a higher weight capacity.

These devices are designed to give you better stability and balance to help with not falling.  The last thing we want is to use a device that cannot do what it intended to do and cause more harm than good. A steel frame walker is strong but will weight more than aluminum rollator walkers.

Weight of the Rollator

The actual weight of a rollator is important, especially for those who will be traveling with it.  It is interesting to know that rollators are not that heavy and a lot of them come in at under 20 pounds.  Some are as light as 13 pounds.

However, depending on your physical ability to carry something that is 20 pounds to get it into a car or truck when you have no help could be a problem.  Keep this in mind when searching for your next rollator.

Today’s technologies and materials allow us to get lighter and stronger devices making the process of having to move them easier.

Height requirements when choosing a walker

Did you know that rollators have height requirements?  This means some rollators are designed for someone that is from 5’8″ to  6′.2″ in height.  Some walkers have higher height limits and some lower.  Be sure to pay attention to this because it can be the difference between a really comfortable experience or one that can be dangerous and even promote falling.

All the rollators above come with height specifics and you can read more when you click to learn about them.

Braking system

The top choice in rollators have braking systems that are easy to use and most are a loop-lock system that is easy for anyone to use.  The way they are situated directly under the rips makes squeezing easy for just about anyone to apply the brakes.

These types of braking systems also allow the wheels to lock in place by pulling down the brake.  To unlock the brake system you simply squeeze them up once.

Brakes can also make turning easier because the braking system on rollators is independent of each other.  This means when you squeeze the left brake only the left wheel will stop.  Same for the right brake.

Wheels matter

Wheels are just as important as other parts of your rollator.  in-fact they may be the most important pieces.  If you are wanting to do a lot of outdoor projects or know you will be using your rollator outdoors a lot you are going to want to find a rollator that has larger wheels.

Larger wheels will just make moving over all types of surfaces like gravel, dirt, grass, and more way easier.  Now beach sand is another story and there are special beach walkers that would be needed in order to traverse those types of terrain.

If you are someone that only will use the rollator indoors then smaller non-skid tires are more what you would want to look for.  These tires will be smooth and provide a nicer more comfortable aid for you. You can expect to see both front wheels and back wheels around 7 1/2 inches or more on a rollator walker.

When thinking outdoors we suggest the following:

No less than 8 inches in diameter.  But we recommend 10 inches for the front canisters for true outdoor use.

Accessories and features

While this may not be important to some accessories and features can make your rollator more comfortable especially for those who use it a lot.

Some accessories like cup holders, seat cushions, baskets, and carrying cases might come with your purchase.  Some of the top rollator walkers listed above come with carrying cases and baskets at the time of this review.

Having a way to carry personal items is important and should be invested in to help carry phones, gloves, blankets, and other things you may need when you are out.

Anatomy of a Rollator walker

You should be familiar with the parts and how they function even if it is just on a basic level.  The below will break down the basic parts, and functions of a Rollator walker.

Walker Heights
  • Grips:  The grips are what you hold on to as you are moving.  Comfortable grips can help you walk further with less effort.
  • Hand Brakes: These are the brake handles that when squeezed allow the braking system at the back wheels to stop or lock.
  • Seat/seat width:  On 4 wheel rollators these are where you can sit and rest.  Some models even have storage under the seat that lifts up.
  • Wheels:  Wheels are important as we wrote about above.  These can be large or small depending on the application you want to use the rollator for.
  • Seat depth:  This is how deep the seat is.
  • Walker height:  This is important to know what size walker you should get.  Walkers have limits and are designed for specific height measurements.

So, what Is the best Rollator walkers?

As you can see there are a lot of choices when it comes to rollators.  If you are looking for the best one we have made our choice for the top one.

Our top choice for the top rollator walker is…

Drive Nitro Rollator

This walker with a seat provides a stable and balanced environment.  it is lightweight and can be traveled with.  The wheels are large enough that they can be used on most surfaces inside and out.   With that said we still suggest that you match your rollator to the environment, you plan on using the most.  if that is indoors then find a rollator with small wheels that would be easier to use indoors.
